Civil society successfully keeps Russia out of Human Rights Council

Ahead of a October 10, 2023 meeting in the UN General Assembly, a broad coalition of human rights organizations, including the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, protested against the consideration of the candidacy of the Russian Federation as a member of the UN Human Rights Council.

The organizations united under the umbrella of the Ukraine 5 AM Coalition argued that Russia’s ongoing aggression and human rights violations on the territory of Ukraine was incompatible with membership.

In spite of aggressive diplomatic campaigning on Russia’s part, the Putin regime failed to convince the UN to re-admit the country to the Human Rights Council, from which it was suspended in April 2022.

The Norwegian Helsinki Committee commends all who took a stance against Russian membership in the HRC.
