The Presidents, who will receive the prize on behalf of the European Union, are asked to mark the fourth anniversary of Liu Xiaobo’s harsh imprisonment as well as the second anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to him by devoting parts of their Nobel lecture to urging the Chinese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release him.
Chinese poet, human rights defender and Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Price in 2010, was sentenced to eleven years in prison on 25 December 2009. Prior to his current detention, Liu Xiaobo had spent a total of five years in prison for his peaceful activism and writings, in addition to frequent short arrests, harassment and censorship.
